It's in the "P" word, and very similar to what you might say when you finally upload your Pictures to the computer and find that they're Putrid: The frame blurred, the object is out of focus but that drab background is Perfectly vivid, the light flickered when you flashed and there's a wavy discoloration to the Picture.
Any number of things can go wrong when you're photographing, and few of us have such terrific skills in photography, as my friend Carien Shippers.
Carien has taken photography, and her love of subject, to an extraordinary level and accomplished great art successes. Me? I've taken great art successes and photographed them into extraordinary junk! My art is something I do and it comes easily through hard work and that little artist spark that resides in me, but photography is more of a burning the candle at both ends kind of feeling.
Bridging the gap can make or break the sell-ability of your work or ideas. Personally, this is absolutely a detriment and I've tried everything from hiring a photographer to trying to create a good illusion on my own.
I'd like to help you save time, and money, and provide you with some possible solutions.
Here is our first example:
Would you purchase an item shown like this? I'm guessing not.
Here are a few issues that I see with this picture:
- The overall picture is confusing.. What is the subject or purpose of the picture?
- The item is drowned by the uninteresting, cluttered and over abundant use of background.
- The pretty item is not shown well and is out of focus, therefore making it very unappealing.
- What do you see? What would you fix?
This photo is a much more interesting, detailed, and evocative rendition of the trinket. It is sure to elicit some sales, as well as provide the buyer with a more accurate rendering of the item. Not to mention, it is sure to catch the eye of potential customers, on a page swarming with pictures of other people's items.
There were no changes to the photo in exception to cropping it, to
ensure that the item was properly arranged and not drowned out by too
much background. What did I do? Honestly, I am blessed with having a daughter who is equally artistic and has a much more contemporary eye, when it comes to photography.
While her idea was immediate and effortless, in contrast to my painstaking deliberation, the result is something that any of us can easily achieve.
Join me on tomorrow's post, I'll take you from boring to fantastic, zero to dollars, in lightning speed!
P.S.-This item and the others, in upcoming posts, will be on Etsy very soon!
