Surprise!

Summer is over and here I am again, creating in the studio.
I've refreshed a few items in the Etsy shop, in preparation for listing new items. I hope that the Summer has treated you well and you're gearing up for the fun parts of winter's  refuge.

Testing, 1, 2, 3... I think my blog no longer works. If you see this, please respond.

To be, or not to be, an artist... THAT is the question!

A friend that I hold dear, Robin, once told me that what she does isn't art. This, after I told her what a beautiful gift she had sent me- it was a picture of a horse, sculpted in folded paper. For me, I cannot even imagine how to make something like it. Yet, she doesn't consider herself an artist.... What?!
This is quite an undertaking, this post... It is a very in depth sort of subject, yet it is so difficult to put into words or even to have people absorb.
When you take something that has been scrutinized for literal centuries, or since the beginning, and still has negative connotations as the core societal understanding, it is nearly impossible to rearrange people's individual associations.
We've all shrugged off the drunken or doped up artist, as if that were the norm. I'm ashamed to say that even I am guilty of that social faux pas. When you think of successful, you think of Mr. Bigwig in his big city office, somewhere, not of lowly artist in a down home setting with their easel in the back forty (acreage talk).
You'd be amazed at how difficult it is to get an artist to admit they are an artist, sometimes. I've had speeches, even with a crowd full of nothing but artists, and they nervously shuffled around when I asked them to proclaim, to everyone, that it's their profession. Individuals have also told me that it is impossible to even tell their own family members. It's shocking.
So, in lieu of wasting your precious reading time, I won't try to convince you that you should be proud to be an artist. I will tell you that you should be, LOL.
Commercial art and technology are, fortunately, beginning to change that wicked societal ignorance. It may be long after I am gone that I'll see the remedy, but it is a welcome change.
If you have questions as to whether or not you are an artist, or if you want to be one: You can look it up in a dictionary, find whatever answer suits your brain on the Internet, or just decide for yourself.
My high horse bucks me off here, when I tell you that I've only been able to call myself an artist for about the past six or seven years. It's a long road, hang in there baby!

Acrylic, Oil, and other greasy stuff

Whether it's acrylic, oil, watercolor, or play-doh, you have many choices in which media you prefer.
I am often asked, "Why acrylics?"
The answer is not as simple as it may seem, when I answer, "I just like them."
Acrylics get a bad rap, on so many levels. Honestly, it is just like any new thing that is scrutinized for the simple fact of being new. They've only been commercially available since the 1950's (debatable).
Part of their allure, for me, is the fact that people find them such a topic of debate. I just love the crap out of that! Acrylic paint turns my crank in many ways, but mainly the workability and the flexibility (there are tons of mediums on the market) keep me interested.
Each media is just as fulfilling as the next, depending on the individual artist. It is up to you to determine which is your preferred choice. Just as your style progresses and evolves, so will your understanding that the rules people set out, mean very little, in the way of the artistic reality.
To me, artistic reality is finding what is real for me, not everyone else. My paths have been urged into many paths, I've heard tons of advice and pursued knowledge like crazy, and only one thing remains steadfast; I take good and bad from each experience and it manifests into the growth of my own artistic style, use, and voice. My paintings turn out how I paint them; That, is my artistic reality.
Getting your hands and head dirtied by the masses of out-flux out there, is just the beginning. You'll twist and turn with the advice, the lessons, the experiences, and learn to just do what it is you enjoy and find fulfilling.
Find yourself an art kit (I've found some really cheap and fascinating ones at garage sales) that has several media, mess around with them in the way you want to, see which one(s) intrigue you. Learn more about it's options, like additives and mediums, and just enjoy.
Play, go ahead... I'm waiting to see what it is you have to share with me.

Paint-a-holic

When painting is brought up, my mind instantly wanders to that semi-catatonic state of feeling that painting feeling, right in that moment. It's a combination of the preparation (and anticipation) that goes into the next painting, as much as it is self medicating with my life's blood.
It's sort of like an addiction, only worse; This one, you cannot let go or quit. The good thing about it is, for one, it is legal, LOL. The other good thing is that you don't have to do it to feel it!
Painting is something that many, many artists try, at least once. While many of them move on to other media, few of us hang in there and find that it is, in fact, our grounding and has permanency.
In my painting, it has survived many trials and tribulations, but no matter how long it is between paintings and explorations, I always come back to it.
There is an acrylic that I'm working on, right now, even though I haven't touched it since last Summer. I can talk to you all day long about how the rules say you have to paint every day and do so many paintings per day to be a real artist. BAH! To be a real artist, you just have to have it in your blood, that your heart would stop pounding without it. There truly aren't any rules and I dare you to scoff in the faces of those that tell you there are.
Start with guidelines to help educate your fixation, learn and grow into your own artistic self, then set your own reality in this amazing realm. Go ahead, just do art. Just do what it is you do.
Love outward.

Once every four years...

Leap! Leap into the air! Today, you're given that extra day that you ask for!
When life is truly hectic, which is pretty typical for me, the familiar addage of "There just aren't enough hours in the day," springs up. Well, here is an example where we get more than what we want; an entire day!
Sure, it only comes around once every four years, but just think where we'd be without Caesar (realizing that the calendar was a bit, shall we say, 'off'?)!
Yesterday, I realized that my blog post did not post, for Monday. I'm very bummed because I don't see it anywhere in my drafts and I had some terrific content.
Just to make it up to you, I'd like to give you this cool little freebie. It is a jpg image, of a 1920's news paper clipping. It is a fun clipping with just enough quirky to fit in for today. Just right click and save!
My dear friend, Carien Shippers, allowed me to enter some information about her in my blog and Monday's post included a special 'thank you', that wasn't included. However, I would like to invite you to check out her website and her works, which can be seen in such amazing publications as Western Horseman. Her site is www.imagequine.com and she is such a beautiful person, you have got to research her and her work!
Carien, you have stuck with me through the thick and thin with my online art attempts, including the first online art collaboration ever, and your work is remarkable. Thanks for allowing me to use your work as an example on my blog. You are invited to do a guest blog-post, whenever you wish.
To my beloved readers-   I hope you have an amazing day, I know it is EPIC for me! Hugs to all. B')

Products Photographed Perfectly

Good morning! Today we resume our conquest of the camera.
Whether it be your cell phone or an actual camera (gasp!), there are very little limitations you have when comparing the two.
A cell phone, which is what I'm now using, is easy and fast and quickly uploads to the computer. It takes clearer photographs with a higher resolution than my old Kodak does. However, the Kodak camera takes a different kind of photograph, one that I like to use when I'm shooting for a more aged or vintage look. It seems strange, to me, but it captures the light differently.
These are important notes to make when you begin perfecting your photographs. Use the camera that you're not only comfortable with, but also that allows you to take your visions to reality in an easier manner.
Yesterday, I gave two examples of photographs and explained a few differences between the two. While it seemed like an incredible difference, the time taken for the better picture was actually less. Time is money, so I saved a few pennies!
My thoughts are that if you keep a few pointers in mind, that I learned from photography class, it will slimline your work.
  • The item should be show ready (no smudges, animal hairs, dirt).
  • The sun should come from over your shoulder or behind your head, and not from in front of you or on top of you (depending on artistic view of the image, of course).
  • Shadows should be 'placed' near the object, to give it gravity.
  • Early morning hours have a fuller spectrum of light.
  • Lighting creates the mood.
  • The background should not detract from the subject, and can add to it (theme, etc).
Choosing your location, in my opinion, is the most important step in taking photographs of your work. If you choose the location with regards to lighting, theme, and angles, you can easily make it a one-step process.
In yesterday's first photo, I simply cleared off a spot on my workbench, plopped the trinket down and pushed the camera button. In order to make the photo ready for the blog, I had to crop it, do some color work, and fix the resolution.  In the second photo, my daughter simply set it in the spot, took the picture at an angle, and I then cropped it to size.
Take the time it takes and it will take less time. That phrase works in nearly every facet of my life, and it truly does help here.
My daughter has a contemporary and spot-on eye for photographing my art, so I frequently leave it to her (plus I'm fostering her artistic spark). However, I'm inspired and able to do it and you are absolutely as capable and your creative eye will truly alight when you start having fun with it.
Blog you on Monday! Have a great weekend!

Picture Posting Posing Possible Problematic Perception, Perfected

You've taken the time to take Photographs of your artwork, you're Pensive... Your rendition of the item is monumentally important to the success of either your ability to sell the item, or your reputation of that ability, or even both.
It's in the "P" word, and very similar to what you might say when you finally upload your Pictures to the computer and find that they're Putrid: The frame blurred, the object is out of focus but that drab background is Perfectly vivid, the light flickered when you flashed and there's a wavy discoloration to the Picture.
Any number of things can go wrong when you're photographing, and few of us have such terrific skills in photography, as my friend Carien Shippers.
Carien has taken photography, and her love of subject, to an extraordinary level and accomplished great art successes. Me? I've taken great art successes and photographed them into extraordinary junk! My art is something I do and it comes easily through hard work and that little artist spark that resides in me, but photography is more of a burning the candle at both ends kind of feeling.
Bridging the gap can make or break the sell-ability of your work or ideas. Personally, this is absolutely a detriment and I've tried everything from hiring a photographer to trying to create a good illusion on my own.

I'd like to help you save time, and money, and provide you with some possible solutions.
  Here is our first example:
Would you purchase an item shown like this? I'm guessing not.
Here are a few issues that I see with this picture:
  1. The overall picture is confusing.. What is the subject or purpose of the picture?
  2. The item is drowned by the uninteresting, cluttered and over abundant use of background.
  3. The pretty item is not shown well and is out of focus, therefore making it very unappealing.
  4. What do you see? What would you fix?
In our second example, you can see a vast difference:
This photo is a much more interesting, detailed, and evocative rendition of the trinket. It is sure to elicit some sales, as well as provide the buyer with a more accurate rendering of the item. Not to mention, it is sure to catch the eye of potential customers, on a page swarming with pictures of other people's items.

There were no changes to the photo in exception to cropping it, to ensure that the item was properly arranged and not drowned out by too much background. What did I do? Honestly, I am blessed with having a daughter who is equally artistic and has a much more contemporary eye, when it comes to photography.
While her idea was immediate and effortless, in contrast to my painstaking deliberation, the result is something that any of us can easily achieve.
Join me on tomorrow's post, I'll take you from boring to fantastic, zero to dollars, in lightning speed!
P.S.-This item and the others, in upcoming posts, will be on Etsy very soon!

Post Birthday Post

Whew! The birthday bash is over and my daughter and I still have swimming brains from the birthday cake sugar high, lol.
For those of you who are new to my world, my daughter was born on my birthday. What could be a better gift than that?! The doctors said she stayed in the oven for an extra month, just to do it that way and hog all my birthday glory. I say- she loved me so much, right from the start, that she waited to give me the gift of her.
Pretty special stuff.
It's impossible to think of anything else to blog, that could even come close, with that thought in mind. See you tomorrow!

Word of the Day for Saturday, (last day)

"FORTIS'SI'MO".... Today I implore you with as much FORTIS'SI'MO as I can muster, to do something for yourself, today.
You know that project that you've put on the back burner so that you can do the 'more important' stuff? Not today, honey... Light the fire, for your self.

As women often do, we tend to put responsibilities and other people on the front line while we continually suffocate our own desires and self pamperings (is that a word??). I say we re-write our paths and move forward with our empowerment; self. Today, we should have two Words of the Day... SELF & FORTIS'SI'MO!
Shhhhh.... I give you permission!

Word of the Day for Friday

FRIDAY!! I absolutely relish Fridays! This is the day that my lovely daughter doesn't have school and I can see her beautiful face a little more. Love you, baby.
Today's word of the day is one of my personal favorites... "REVERBERATION"
(echo back or reflect).
This word is very versatile, but it just sounds cool; Don't you think?
Today's activities are a REVERBERATION of yesterday's.... I cannot get out the REVERBERATION on my CB radio (trucker in me is erupting again)... You have got to see this art, it is a REVERBERATION of my inner most feelings.
Yep, I love it! What is your REVERBERATION?

Word of the Day for Thursday

Word of the Day, today, is "PERTINACIOUS"
adj. holding tenaciously to a purpose, opinion, etc.. There, I spared you the stress of looking it up.

I wish that I could be more PERTINACIOUS, when it comes to individual art projects. My projects are vast and spread and subject to be in line with an ever changing plethora of other projects. Now, if I could be a little less PERTINACIOUS when it comes to my opinions... Well, that's a different post entirely, LOL.
Peace out.

Word of the Day for Wednesday

Wednesday is, as some refer to it, hump day. We are nearly there, half way through to the weekend.
Personally, I dig the week- it means I'm working on something and that gets my heart pumping (in a good way).
So, today's word is TRANSMUTE.
It is something that my art does, on a regular basis, in many ways.

Come on, I DARE YOU to look it up, the old fashioned way- in a dictionary. Old school, baby. ;)

Be My Valentine?

Happy Valentine's Day to you, yes you! I hope that you will be my Valentine on this special day. Next to Christmas, I think it is one of the most precious holidays of the year.
While I believe we should all work a little harder to go out of our way for other people, this day is definitely a giving of oneself kind of day.
Is there a better thing to celebrate than love?
I send you out my warmest, deepest wishes that you get a rosy red heart, today, and everyday.
Love!

Word of the Day for Tuesday

Today's word of the day is MOMENTUM.

Nissan likes to send me coupons for automotive services and they used to have inspirational pictures and statements on them.
My favorite one, hanging in my studio, is "MOMENTUM, Limitless Motion".

What gives you MOMENTUM? Share your thoughts!

Word of the Day for Monday

Good morning! Today's word of the day is, DUCKTIVITIES.
LOL, yes, I'm aware it's not a real word.

Google 'Duck Tape Crafts' for some fun things to make with this versatile tool, most likely stuffed in your junk drawer.
 :)
What will you do with your DuCkTivitiEs?

Sunday... Sunday, Sunday, Sunday...

Today is the only day I will be blogging you, on a Sunday.
Sundays are, for me, a time to spend relaxing and enjoying those I love. Sometimes, it is just a day to myself, but I enjoy the day with friends and loved ones, whenever possible.
Usually, it means I do things that I enjoy, and for my self. If I don't remember her, how can I remember you?
Besides, I just adore you, so why wouldn't I make sure that you stick around?
So, if you need a reprieve from the emails, you can bet there will be one from mine (on Sundays).
May I make a toast?
Here's one for the white wicker rocking chair and the purring of the cutest cat in the world, watching as the horses graze and play in the field, with the backdrop of the Colorado Rockies.

Word of the Day

This week, I thought I'd try a fun escape from the ordinary; I'll call it the 'Word of the Day Project'!
Today's word is, "EMBARK".
What will you EMBARK upon?

Glass cutting

Yesterday, I told you about limiting my art explorations... BAH! Lol.
Today, I want to tell you about the newest adventure in my art studio.... Glass cutting.
There is no exclamation point because, frankly, I'm disappointed. I'm sure it is my own newbie-ness, but I simply cannot get the hang of it. I purchased a glass cutter from Kobalt, (that does not cut or even score the glass), several remnants from our local stained glass shop (Lane's House of Glass- VERY cool store!), and some glass pliers that are made to snap the glass pieces.
If it so happened that even one of the glass cutting scores actually succeeded, I might be able to give you some fun project ideas; but for now, it is off to learn how to do this. Wish me luck!

Cold=Art

With a crazy winter-land, outside, I am spending precious moments creating art jewelry pieces & finding new art to try.
The weatherman predicted a sprinkle of rain, but the blizzard outside is chilling cold. With no way to enjoy (for me or the horse) riding, today, I'm loving being stuck indoors with art!
I've found some terrific sellers on Etsy, most of whom have incredible tastes and ideas that really spark my interest.
My biggest challenge is limiting my ideas.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Today, I received a fantastic order of metal numbers, from an Etsy seller, Dashalee3. They are just scrumptious! I've been rummaging through all the goodies at the local thrift stores and haven't been able to find such a delectable selection.
Although I'm completely set on sending you pics, I was really miffed about being unable to just load it. It is nearly ten pm and I wish I could just take a picture and upload it directly to this blog.
When I dream, 'cuz sometimes I do this on purpose, I dream of a blog's abilities that far exceed reality.
Like; I can think up a million things to insert into the blog, including fun how-to's, and they just magically appear in it!
Did I really just say, "Like"?! Wow, we're going back in time, now.
Anyway...
I'm going to push Blogger's creators to act on a few of my ideas, LOL- just kidding. Seriously, though... Wouldn't it be great to upload pics directly? I don't foresee it, since texting my blogs was supposed to be a reality, but in truth it came out as a mess of alpha numericals.
Still love ya, Blogger, really, I do/ :)
What is your blogability? I am dying to hear what your blog can do for you.
